How to Get More Google Reviews Without Breaking Google's Rules
How to get more Google reviews for a local business: create your review link and QR code, ask at the right moment, reply to every review, and avoid the requests Google prohibits.

Ask every customer right after the job with your Google review link or QR code, make it a routine step rather than a favour, reply to every review, and never offer a reward or ask only happy customers.
Figures as of 2026-10-30
The most reliable way to get more Google reviews is to ask every customer, right after the job, with a direct review link or QR code, and to make that request a routine step instead of an occasional favour. Reply to every review you receive. And stay inside Google's rules: no rewards for reviews, and no asking only the customers you expect to be happy.
Why Google reviews matter for a local business
Reviews help customers decide, and they help you rank. Google lists three local ranking factors: relevance, distance, and prominence. It says prominence is based partly on "how many reviews you have," and that "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."
That matters most in the map results, where three businesses get most of the attention. Reviews will not fix a profile with the wrong category or a website that loads slowly, but once those basics are right, a steady flow of recent reviews is one of the few ranking signals you can influence every week. Create your Google review link and QR code
Google gives every Business Profile a direct link and QR code that open the review form. Creating them takes about two minutes.
- Open your Business Profile on Google.
- Select Read reviews, then Get more reviews.
- Copy the link, or right-click the QR code and save the image.
Google notes that the QR code can currently only be generated in a computer browser, not on a phone. Save both somewhere your whole team can find them, because the link is only useful if everyone who talks to customers uses it.
Ask at the moment the customer is happiest
Timing matters more than wording. Ask within a day of the finished job, while the result is fresh and before the customer moves on.
Google itself suggests these places for the link or QR code:
- Receipts and invoices. Add one line with the link.
- Thank-you emails. Send them the same day the work is done.
- The end of a chat or message thread. Add it after you confirm the job is complete.
- A printed QR code in your shop. Put it at the counter or reception desk.
Two more places work well for service businesses. The first is a short text message after a visit, written as one sentence plus the link. The second is your website's form confirmation page or auto-reply email. If you have not looked at that page in a while, our contact form conversion guide covers what else belongs there.
Keep the request plain: "Thanks for choosing us. If you have a minute, an honest Google review helps other customers find us," followed by the link. Do not tell people what to write or what rating to give.
What Google does not allow
Google's Maps content policy treats the following as fake engagement or rating manipulation, and reviews that break it can be removed.
- Rewards for reviews. You cannot offer payment, discounts, or free goods or services in exchange for a review, or for changing or removing a negative one.
- Asking only happy customers. You cannot "selectively solicit positive reviews" or discourage negative ones. A "rate us first" screen that sends only five-star customers to Google is exactly this.
- Review quotas for staff. The policy names "merchants requesting that staff solicit a certain number of reviews."
- Conflicts of interest. Reviews from current or former employees, or from people with a contractual relationship with the business, are not allowed.
The safe pattern is simple: ask everyone, the same way, for an honest review, and give nothing in return.
Reply to every review, including the bad ones
Google says replying to reviews "shows that you value their feedback." Replies are also read by every future customer who scrolls through your profile.
- For positive reviews, thank the person and mention the specific job in one sentence.
- For negative reviews, reply within a day or two, stay calm, acknowledge the problem, and invite them to continue the conversation by phone or email. Do not argue in public, and do not share private details about the customer.
A negative review answered well often does more for trust than another five-star review.
A weekly review routine that takes ten minutes
- Monday: Check that the review link is on your invoice template, thank-you email, and website confirmation page.
- After each finished job: Send the link within 24 hours.
- Friday: Reply to every new review from the week.
Review requests work best when the profile and website behind them are accurate. Google now gives owners only 4 days to respond to suggested profile edits, so it is worth reading our insight on the 4-day rule too.

Frequently asked questions
Can I offer a discount in exchange for a Google review?
No. Google's Maps content policy prohibits offering incentives such as payment, discounts, or free goods or services in exchange for posting a review. Reviews collected that way can be removed, so ask for an honest review and offer nothing in return.
Is it okay to ask only my happiest customers for a review?
No. Google's policy does not allow businesses to selectively solicit positive reviews or to discourage negative ones. A 'rate us first' screen that sends only happy customers to Google counts as selective solicitation. Ask every customer the same way.
Do Google reviews help my business rank higher on Google Maps?
Yes. Google says prominence is one of its local ranking factors and that it is based partly on how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Reviews work alongside relevance and distance, so they help most when your profile and website are also accurate.
