Calgary Website Design Cost: What Drives the Quote and How to Compare
Why Calgary website quotes range from a few thousand to five figures, what actually drives the number, and the contract terms to check before you sign.

Why Calgary quotes vary so much
Ask three Calgary agencies for a website quote and you can get three numbers that are not remotely close. Owners usually read that as someone lying. Usually nobody is.
The quotes differ because they describe different amounts of work. A number near the bottom of the range typically assumes you supply finished text, photos, and a clear page list. A number near the top assumes the agency does the interviews, writes the copy, arranges photography, and builds a structure designed around what your customers actually search for.
Same deliverable name. Very different job.
The four variables that actually move the number
1. Who writes the words. This is the single biggest swing. Writing service pages that convert is slow work, and agencies that do it properly price it in. If a quote seems low, check whether "client provides all content" is in the scope. Most owners underestimate how long that takes โ the half-finished text file is the most common reason Calgary projects stall for months.
2. Page count, and whether pages are unique. Ten pages built from one template is not the same job as ten pages each designed around a different service. Ask which one you are buying.
3. Whether SEO is built in or bolted on. Structured data, page titles that match real searches, internal linking, and a working sitemap either exist from day one or get sold to you later as a separate project. See what a small business website actually costs for how these line items get split.
4. What happens after launch. A site with no maintenance plan quietly decays โ dependencies age, forms break, content goes stale. Some quotes include a year of that, some include nothing. The monthly maintenance guide covers what this realistically costs.
WordPress or custom: the honest comparison
Most Calgary quotes come in one of these two shapes, and the price gap between them is often the real question underneath "why is this one cheaper."
WordPress is faster and cheaper to start, and you can restructure pages yourself without calling anyone. The tradeoffs are real: plugin vulnerabilities are the most common way small business sites get compromised, and every plugin you add slows the site down. Speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor, and on mobile roughly half of visitors leave a page that takes more than about three seconds.
A custom build โ in our case Next.js โ pre-renders pages ahead of time rather than assembling them on every visit. The site is fast by default, there is no plugin attack surface, and SEO is written into the code instead of depending on a plugin that may go paid or unmaintained. The tradeoff is that structural changes need a developer. Content edits do not.
Neither answer is universally right. If you need to reorganize your own pages monthly, WordPress fits better. If you need speed, security, and search visibility and are happy to hand structural work to someone else, a custom build fits better.
Be suspicious of any agency that will not name a downside of its own approach.
Before you sign: five checks
- Ask for the exclusions list, not the inclusions list. Every agency writes an attractive inclusions list.
- Confirm ownership in writing โ domain, hosting account, and source code should end up in your name. Agencies that hold the domain hostage are a known problem and it is entirely avoidable at signing.
- Ask what the monthly cost is after launch, including hosting, maintenance, and any licensed plugins or themes.
- Ask how many revision rounds are included and what a round means. "Unlimited revisions" usually means unlimited within a phase, which is not the same thing.
- Ask to see a site they built two years ago. Anyone can show a launch. Fewer can show something that still loads fast and still ranks.
The web development partner checklist goes deeper on evaluating the agency itself.
The part the quote does not cover
A website does not bring in local customers by itself. In Calgary, most first contact for service businesses comes through the Google map pack, which is driven by your Google Business Profile, your categories, and your reviews โ none of which live on the website. Budget for that work separately, or at least know it is missing. How to rank on Google Maps covers what it involves.
A well-built site that nobody finds is an expensive brochure. A mediocre site with a strong profile still gets calls. Ideally you fund both.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a website cost in Calgary?
Quotes for a local business site in Calgary commonly span a wide range, from low four figures for a template build to five figures for a custom multi-page site with copywriting. The spread is real, not a scam โ it reflects how much of the work is being done for you versus by you.
Why is one Calgary quote three times another?
Almost always because the two quotes cover different scope. The cheap one usually excludes copywriting, photography, SEO setup, and post-launch support, which then arrive as change orders. Ask both agencies to list what is excluded, not just what is included.
Should I choose WordPress or a custom-built site?
WordPress makes sense if you need to restructure pages yourself without a developer. A custom build makes sense if speed, security, and search visibility matter more than DIY structural edits. Neither is universally better โ the honest question is which tradeoff fits how you actually work.
What should be in the contract before I pay a deposit?
Who owns the domain, hosting account, and source code after launch; how many revision rounds are included; what the monthly cost is after the build; and what happens if you leave. If any of those four is vague, get it in writing before paying anything.
