Hiring a Google Ads Agency in Calgary: 5 Checks Before You Sign
Before you hand Google Ads to a Calgary agency: the conversion tracking, landing page, and reporting checks that separate real management from budget burn.

Check yourself before you hire
The most common reason Google Ads fails for a Calgary small business is not a bad agency. It is handing ads to anyone before the basics exist on your side.
Run this before your first agency call:
- Is conversion tracking installed and verified? Not analytics โ conversion tracking. Can you see, today, how many form fills and calls came from ads last month? If not, nobody can manage this account meaningfully, including a good agency.
- Do you have a page per service? If every ad has to point at your homepage, your cost per lead will be high no matter who runs the campaign.
- Can you answer the phone during ad hours? Paying for clicks that ring an unanswered phone is the fastest way to lose money in this channel.
Fix these first. An agency can do it for you, but you should know it is prerequisite work, not campaign management, and it should be priced as such.
The five checks
1. Who owns the ad account?
The account must be created under your Google Ads account with the agency granted access, not created inside the agency's account with you as a guest. Otherwise, when you leave, your entire campaign history, conversion data, and machine-learning maturity stay with them and you restart from zero.
This is the single most expensive thing to get wrong, and it costs nothing to get right at signing.
2. How is conversion tracking set up?
Ask them to show you which conversion actions are configured and which are counted as primary. Watch for two common problems: counting every page view as a conversion, which inflates results, and counting the same lead multiple times.
Ask directly: "What is my current cost per qualified inquiry?" If they cannot answer after a month of management, tracking is not properly set up.
3. Where do ads point?
Every ad group should point at a page matching that specific search. Someone searching "emergency furnace repair Calgary" should not land on a homepage listing eight services.
This is where campaign management and web development overlap, and where an agency that only does ads will hit a wall โ they will ask you to build landing pages and then wait. See using Google Ads without wasting budget for how the matching works.
4. What is in the monthly report?
Good reports lead with cost per qualified inquiry and inquiry volume, then explain what changed and what is being tested next. Weak reports lead with impressions and click-through rate, which are activity metrics that can improve while your actual leads fall.
Ask to see a sample report from a real client before signing. Ask what they would do if results dropped for two months straight.
5. Are they honest about when ads are the wrong answer?
An agency that tells you ads are always the answer is selling, not advising. For many Calgary service businesses, the map pack produces more first contacts than paid search, at a fraction of the cost. A good partner will look at your Google Business Profile first and may tell you to spend the first month there instead. How to rank on Google Maps covers what that work involves.
Fee structures, plainly
| Model | How it works | Watch for | |---|---|---| | % of ad spend | Commonly 10โ20% of monthly spend | Incentive to increase your spend; agree in writing on approval for increases | | Flat monthly fee | Fixed regardless of spend | Confirm what happens if your spend grows a lot โ scope may need renegotiating | | Performance-based | Paid per lead or per sale | Define "lead" precisely, or you will pay for junk form fills |
None of these is inherently better. The problem is never the model, it is an undefined model.
The first 90 days, realistically
- Month 1 is a learning budget. Traffic starts immediately, but the campaign needs conversion data before it can optimize. Judging performance here is premature.
- Month 2 is when cost per inquiry becomes meaningful and the first real optimizations land.
- Month 3 is when you decide. If cost per qualified inquiry is not trending down by the end of month three with tracking in place, something is structurally wrong โ usually landing pages or targeting radius, not bid management.
Anyone promising results in week one is describing traffic, not inquiries.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Google Ads agency charge in Calgary?
Most agencies charge either a percentage of ad spend (commonly in the 10-20% band) or a flat monthly fee. Percentage pricing quietly rewards the agency for spending more of your money, so if you choose it, agree in writing on what happens when spend increases and what the reporting cadence is.
Do I need Google Ads if my local SEO already works?
Often not. If you already appear in the map pack for your main services, ads largely buy back traffic you were getting free. Ads earn their place for new locations, competitive categories, seasonal pushes, and services your organic pages do not cover yet.
What is the minimum Google Ads budget for a Calgary small business?
Enough to buy sufficient clicks to learn something โ for most local service categories that means a few hundred dollars a month at minimum. A budget too small never accumulates the conversion data the campaign needs to optimize, so it stays permanently in learning mode and wastes what you do spend.
How do I know if my Google Ads agency is doing a good job?
Cost per qualified inquiry, tracked over time, is the only number that matters. If your reports lead with impressions, clicks, or click-through rate and never mention what a lead costs you, the agency is reporting activity rather than results.
